Fearless Pioneer: Shirley Chisholm's Trailblazing Leadership Characteristics

Shirley Chisolm embodied strength and perseverance despite obstacles. This article discusses her impact as a congresswoman, 1972 presidential run, and her leadership characteristics.

I first learned about Shirley Chisholm as a child while watching a syndicated episode of the 1970s sitcom Good Times. Thelma, one of the sitcom characters, suggested that her younger brother Michael write an essay about a woman that he admires instead of a man and suggested Shirley Chisholm. When I asked my mother about her, she told me that she was the first black person to run for President of the United States. The next time I heard Shirley Chisholm’s name mentioned frequently was during the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were about to make history as either the first black or first woman Democratic party nominee. Shirley Chisholm was credited as being the pioneer for this occurrence.

I recently watched the Netflix movie Shirley and learned more about her 1972 presidential campaign. Shirley Chisholm only spent $300,000 for her campaign which was considered underfunded. She had miniscule support from her colleagues and received three confirmed death threats. Although she faced many obstacles during the campaign, she demonstrated trailblazing leadership during her time as a congresswoman. She fought for unemployment benefits for domestic workers and sponsored a bill to ensure their minimum wage. In addition, she championed  the Equal Rights Amendment, enlisting women into public service, publicly funded daycare, parental leave, and civil rights and voting rights for all citizens.

Shirley Chisholm exemplified the following leadership characteristics.

1.      Visionary

Shirley Chisholm began her career as an educator but did not let not having a background in politics deter her. She sought change for the underserved first at the local level which expanded to state, and finally to national.

2.      Assertiveness

When Shirley Chisolm was assigned to serve on the House Agriculture Committee, she appealed the appointment because she didn’t think it would benefit her Brooklyn, NY district. Her appeal was denied, but her work on the committee help create the Special Supplement Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that did benefit her district.

3.      Empathy

Shirley Chisolm visited George Wallace, Alabama Governor and a political rival, in the hospital after he was shot in an assassination attempt. When asked about the visit, she said that she would not want what happened to him to happen to anyone.

The Art of Restraint: Embracing Self-Control as Your Superpower

Have you ever said something and immediately regretted it? This article defines self control and describes how it can be mastered to improve your physical health and financial stability.

Everyone hates lunch time meetings.

This week I joined a conference call about five minutes before the scheduled start time. One of the attendees’ phones was unmuted and we heard the attendee cursing about why would anyone schedule a meeting during lunch time. The meeting host told the attendee that the phone was unmuted. Then she lightened the atmosphere by saying that she also hates attending meetings and this meeting would be short. The attendee apologized profusely. This situation reminded me of the importance of exercising self-control regardless of whether you think someone is watching or listening to you.

Self-control is defined as the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations. Every day we make decisions whether or not to exercise self-control. For example, we decide whether to eat a sugary treat or eat fruit instead. While shopping, we decide whether to buy an outfit now or wait until it is on sale. In the article What Is Self-Control Theory in Psychology? the author states that self-control can be built like a muscle. The more the muscle is built the stronger it will become.

Abraham Gray, a multi-millionaire entrepreneur, stated on an episode of  The Social Proof Podcast that self-control is a skill that is essential for success. Mr. Gray said most people are hindered from success because they want instant gratification. He described how he was able to lose weight by thinking about the long-term effects of consuming junk food (e.g., weight gain and chronic diseases. The instant pleasure of eating junk food would hinder him from his weight loss and health goals. Mr. Gray discussed how self-control helped him to achieve financial stability and wealth. As a teenager, he habitually saved 50% of his earnings and continued to do this in adulthood. Mr. Gray emphasized that everyone can save and invest a percentage of their income consistently to achieve financial stability.

How can you use self-control as your superpower? What Is Self-Control Theory in Psychology?  lists the following elements to wield self-control.

1.        Deferring gratification

Not obtaining pleasure immediately will reduce impulsiveness and build your self-control. For example, at least three days of each month, I only eat raw fruits and vegetables for my physical and spiritual health. During this time, I focus more on reading and writing.

2.       Ability to be cautious

Thinking before speaking is an example of being cautious. I think being an introvert has help me develop this element since I do not like to say the first thought that comes to my mind.

3.       Cognitive ability

Considering several factors before making a decision in addition to not being afraid to ask questions are methods of practicing this element of self-control. As I have matured, I have become more comfortable asking questions rather than being afraid of judgement from asking a “dumb question”.

4.       Social intelligence

Understanding your behavior, communicating effectively with others, and interpreting body language indicate having social intelligence. Social intelligence can be developed by observing others in social settings and continuously interacting with different people.

Self-control has to be consistently practiced to become a superpower. It is a superpower that will enhance your health, wealth, and relationships.

Analysis of Green Eggs and Ham:  The Infallible Entrepreneurial Traits of Sam-I-Am

Have you ever learned adult lessons from reading a children’s story? The author discusses five entrepreneurial traits of the main character, Sam-I-Am, in the classic children’s book Green Eggs and Ham.

I read to my one-year-old daughter every night before she falls asleep. One night after I finished reading to her Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, I suddenly became reflective and told her that the moral of the story is to tenaciously pursue her goals just as Sam-I-Am persistently badgered a guy to eat green eggs and ham. Persistence is an entrepreneurial trait that is defined as the action of continuously doing or trying something despite difficulty or opposition. Once I told her the moral of Green Eggs and Ham, I was inspired to think of how it teaches other entrepreneurial traits.

The plot of Green Eggs and Ham centers around Sam-I-Am’s undaunted attempts to get Guy-Am-I, who was unnamed in the original publication, to eat a dish of green eggs and ham. At the beginning of the book, he enters Guy-Am-I’s house riding a dog and holding a sign which says “I-Am-Sam”.  Sam-I-Am then exits and returns riding a cat and holding a sign that says “Sam-I-Am”.  After Sam-I-Am exits, Guy-Am-I furiously proclaims, “That Sam-I-am! That Sam-I-am! I do not like that Sam-I-Am”. Sam-I-Am returns with a fishing rod apparatus equipped with a glove holding a plate that he has reeled towards Guy-Am-I’s face and asks, “Do you like green eggs and ham? Guy-Am-I firmly replies, “I do not like them, Sam-I-Am. I do not like green eggs and ham.” Sam-I-Am is not discouraged and continuously asks if he would eat them in or on different environments and locations (here, there, house, box, car, tree, train, dark, rain, and boat) and with various animals (mouse, fox, and goat), but Guy still angrily refuses, regardless of the circumstances by saying, "I do not like them here (this place) or there (the other place). I do not like them anywhere."

Keep in mind that Sam and Guy are transported to these different environments and locations. In the book, Sam and Guy are in the car which is on top of a two-car train that derails into a body of water where the boat is located. Sam and Guy splash into the water. Finally, an exhausted Guy-Am-I reluctantly tries the dish just to get Sam to "let him be". Guy eats the entire dish and proclaims that he would eat them in all of the places and with all of the animals mentioned earlier. The story ends with Guy and Sam becoming friends, and Guy happily saying, "I do so like green eggs and ham. Thank you! Thank you, Sam-I-Am."

We learned that the entrepreneurial trait of persistence paid off for Sam-I-Am because he was able to get Guy to try and like green eggs and ham. What are other entrepreneurial traits that can be obtained from this story?

1.       Boldness

At the beginning of the story, Sam-I-Am presents himself to Guy in a bold, unconventional way by riding on a dog and a cat. Sam-I-Am has no fear of being ridiculed or ostracized. Boldness as an entrepreneur involves taking calculated risks and learning from the outcomes to take consistent action.

2.       Ingenuity

Ingenuity is defined as the quality of being clever, original, and inventive. Sam-I-Am’s presentation of the green eggs and ham dish involved ingenuity. He didn’t just hand Guy-Am-I the dish and ask, “would you please try green eggs and ham?” Sam-I-Am designed an apparatus which presented the dish to Guy. As an entrepreneur, you need ingenuity to come up with solutions to customers’ problems.

3.       Creativity

Sam-I-Am demonstrates creativity by asking Guy-Am-I to try the green eggs and ham in different environments and locations. He continuously came up with new ideas to get Guy to try green eggs and ham. As an entrepreneur you need creativity to pivot from one idea to the next until the customer’s problem is solved.

4.       Resilience

Resilience is the ability to endure or recover swiftly from difficulties. Sam-I-Am maintained his composure while asking an increasingly disgruntled Guy-Am-I to try green eggs and ham. Resilience is key for an entrepreneur to become successful due to challenges and setbacks along the way. Without resilience, an entrepreneur would quickly become discouraged and give up on pursuing their business goals.

It is amazing that you can learn entrepreneurial traits from a simple children’s story like Green Eggs and Ham. I’m enthusiastic about what else I will learn after reading the next bedtime story to my daughter.

Solo to Supported: A Trip of a Lifetime

Transitioning from the single life to single motherhood can be overwhelming. However, when a single mother takes time for self-care and has a support system, she feels lighter. The author shares how she practices self- care and graciously receives assistance from her support system.

One year into motherhood, and life as a childless single woman seems like a distant memory. I look at vacation pictures from less than ten years ago and see myself smiling in destinations including Hawaii, Spain, Jamaica, and Ghana. Traveling made me happy. I would return home with renewed energy for my daily activities and new dishes to add to my culinary repertoire. Now, a monthly 20-minute trip to get a massage and afterwards shopping at Trader Joe’s gives me the same feeling that traveling did. In addition, when I get home, I look forward to seeing my daughter’s smiling face and ensuring that her needs are met.

Knowing that I have sole responsibility for her wellbeing encourages me to conserve my mental energy. I no longer let minor annoyances such as a getting cut off in traffic or a difference of opinion with a colleague at my job ruin my entire day. My daughter deserves to have a mother who is fully present. Sharing her milestones with friends and family allows me to reflect and stay connected with them.

I am blessed to have a community of friends and family help me thrive as a single mother. A friend and her family hosted my baby shower and my family and friends came from out of town to support me. After my daughter was born, a friend offered to drive me and my daughter home. My mother and stepfather spent three weeks with me to support my first few weeks of motherhood. When I needed to go to the doctor for a follow up visit after my daughter was born, another friend volunteered to watch my daughter. Other friends have checked in with me frequently brought gifts for me and my daughter to show support.

About two weeks ago, I planned to celebrate my daughter’s birthday by dressing her up and taking pictures. I planned to have a party for her when she was two or three years old. I figured by then I would have her around kids her own age that could come to her party.  When I told a friend my plans, she informed me that I needed to commemorate this occasion and planned a last-minute party. I invited a few friends and an aunt who lives close by. One friend booked a flight for this occasion. We all enjoyed ourselves during the party and my aunt recorded a video of my daughter’s confused reaction to everyone singing “Happy Birthday”.

Although I don’t travel as much as I used to, I am traveling these parenthood streets with a strong support system. I look forward to taking trips and creating memories with my daughter. I believe observing her enchantment and curiosity during these family trips will give me more enjoyment than my travels as a single woman. Cheers to the phenomenal adventures ahead.

Late Bloomer: Embracing Parenthood After Thirty

Embracing parenthood after being single well into your thirties can be challenging. The author shares a few insights on how she navigated the transition from single life to parenthood.

“Why did she wait so long to have a child?” My mother told me this is a question one of her childhood friends asked when my mother told her I was expecting a child. My mother responded to her saying that I was focused on obtaining an education, stable job, and secure relationship. I think the question was annoying but not an unusual question. My mother was considered a late bloomer for having me at thirty years old. When my mother was a young adult, women were expected to be married and have children in their early to mid-twenties.  My friends either already had children in their mid-twenties to late thirties or were happily single and childless. I thought I would be happily single and childless. Currently, I am a single mother.

I wanted to have at least one child, but I wanted to have a child at least by the age of thirty-five. I told one of my friends, who had a child at thirty-eight years old, that I didn’t want to be an old mother. She was alarmed at my statement because she thought I was judging her for having a child later in life. However, I explained to her that I wanted to be a youthful mother and I could barely tolerate menstrual cramps. I couldn’t imagine tolerating labor pains. We now laugh about that conversation.

When I found out I was pregnant, I was in shock. Initially, I thought I was going through early menopause until the second home pregnancy test produced the same positive result. I started worrying about how inadequate the space is in my home. In addition, I had anxiety on how I would I manage investing in my retirement account and an education fund for my child. Furthermore, I was concerned about how I would parent my daughter. I was on edge for at least two months until I settled my nerves by being proactive.

To gain some space in my home, I had help moving the desk in my guest bedroom (which is now my daughter’s room), to the living room. I gave away some books and purchased hanging bookshelves for my living room. Recently, I researched investment options for my daughter’s education. I’m still deciding the best option but will have this settled in the next few weeks.

During my pregnancy, I started reading a book by Dr. Becky Kennedy entitled Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be. The advice that Dr. Kennedy provides is practical and can be applied to other personal relationships. I know I will refer to this book often as my daughter grows up. My daughter just turned one years old and I know the pages of this book will be well worn by the time she is a teenager.

Now that I have one year of parenthood under my belt, I’m not as anxious about parenthood as I was initially. I’m blessed to be surrounded by an outstanding community of family and friends. Also, I asked God to give me grace for each season of my child’s life and equip me with the skills that I need to properly raise my child. I’m certain He will honor my requests.

Turning Setbacks into Success: Strategies for Moving Forward When Passed Over for Promotion

Being passed over for promotion after working diligently can make anyone feel unsuccessful. This article gives practical advice on how to be resilient when you aren’t recognized for your accomplishments.

I have been passed over for promotion seven times in my career. The first time I wasn’t promoted, I was depressed for over a month. I felt I had wasted time working to meet the promotion benchmarks. My colleagues told me that it was normal to not get promoted the first time around and I will likely get promoted the second time. When I wasn’t promoted the second time, I begin thinking about other ways to earn additional income. After the third time that I was passed over for promotion, I decided to become a self-published author. Between the third and fourth times that I was passed over, I was pursuing master’s degree in Cybersecurity Policy and Management. I was advised that completing another graduate level degree would demonstrate your commitment to professional development. In addition to pursuing the master’s degree, I began honing my public speaking skills by joining Toastmasters International.

I sought career counseling to help me identify what I needed to do to get promoted. The first  career counselor told me to leave my career since I hadn’t been promoted after so many attempts. I didn’t heed that advice but continued working while writing two other books. The second career counselor encouraged me to ask my supervisor to work on projects outside of my normal job. Then, I would apply to receive an award for any accomplishments gained from working on the projects. This idea sounded like a long shot since I had already requested to work on other projects but given sporadic work that would not be considered worthy of an award.

If I were given a chance to turn back the hands of time after not getting promoted the first time, I would not have become depressed. Instead of focusing on the outcome, I would focus on the skills I was learning to improve myself. Furthermore, I would have focused on the relationships built through networking with other colleagues while working on the projects.

Listed below are strategies for moving forward after not getting promoted.

1.      Reflect on the outcome no longer than two weeks.

Allow yourself to grieve for a week and then approach your supervisor with a clear mind to determine what you need to do to get promoted.

2.      Acquire additional skills.

Taking time to add to your skillset will give you a feeling of accomplishment and confidence.

3.      Network

Networking with your colleagues may expose you to different opportunities and ideas to improve your promotion chances or establish a business.

9-to-5 Job, 9 pm-to-Early Morning Ventures: The Parallel Worlds of Entrepreneurial Ambition

Feeling stuck in your career can cause discouragement or encourage you to lean towards entrepreneurship. This post discusses the decision to work full time while pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors.

“It’s just a job…” This phrase has stuck with me for over five years. A former director said this to me during a discussion about my career. I’m a chemist by training and I was finishing the requirements of a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity Policy and Management. I was looking for a career change. The director told me that he would connect me with one of his friends who worked in the cybersecurity industry. He never did.

This was one of many instances of leaders verbally recognizing my work yet not following through with their promises of helping me advance my career. After reading several books by James Altucher (Choose Yourself, The Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth, and Reinvent Yourself) and listening to Dr. Mansur Hasib’s audiobook Bring Inner Greatness Out, I was convinced that several employees have not had upper management’s support in career advancement. The main piece of advice provided in the books mentioned above is that you are responsible for developing marketable skills and networking.

Although I still have a full-time job, I work at night to develop my writing and public speaking skills. It isn’t easy and there have been nights that I have slacked off. However, now I have accountability through a coach who reminds me of my goals and deadlines. It would be embarrassing and wasteful at the regular meetings with my coach to not have anything accomplished.

The satisfaction of making a lasting impact on others and leave a business for my family to inherit are the primary reasons of my entrepreneurial ambition. My family benefits from the income received from my job; however, I can’t give them my job once I leave. I never wanted “just a job”. I want to be compensated for the value that I provide. As William H. Johnsen said, “If it is to be, it is up to me.”

Beyond Words on Paper: The Progression of a Writer into a Dynamic Speaker

This post discusses the circumstances that caused an introverted writer to enjoy public speaking.

I was elated when I found out that I was salutatorian of my graduating high school class. A salutatorian is the student having the second highest rank who delivers the welcoming speech during the graduation ceremony. Up until that point, my closest experience to giving a speech had been delivering short lines in a Christmas play and reciting bible verses in front of my church congregation. I had the opportunity to join a debate team in high school but declined because I believed only extroverted people were great public speakers. I wanted to stick to writing my thoughts and having someone read them. I wasn’t scared about giving the speech; however, I knew I had to rehearse it ahead of time to mitigate uneasiness.

After I wrote the speech, my mother helped me practice. She told me to make sure that I give eye contact to the audience, inflect my voice, and smile. Another public speaking tip that I used was to imagine myself successfully delivering the speech. When it was time to deliver the speech, I was nervous  but channeled my nervousness into my delivery. I walked up to the podium and smiled at the students before I began. As I addressed the class, I heard one student say, “she is happy.” Hearing this relaxed me. After the graduation ceremony, a few students came up to me and said I did I great job. I enjoyed the experience; however, I didn’t think I would have to give a speech again.

During my sophomore year in college, I was required to take an introduction to public speaking class. The project from this class that stood out, was a group presentation that required our group to come up with a concept for a night club. My contribution to the presentation was teaching a short dance routine that was to be performed in the club. I enjoyed doing this because I wasn’t shy about dancing in public.

I didn’t give a formal presentation again until I defended my chemistry master’s thesis. I prepared by studying my thesis multiple times, writing down questions that I anticipated being asked during the defense, and rehearsing my presentation. The defense was an hour-long including questions. That was the most speaking I had ever done and I was relieved when I successfully finished the defense.

After I graduated and began my professional career, the only public speaking that I did was answering questions about my research during poster presentations at scientific research symposiums. In 2018, a job recruiter contacted me from LinkedIn to see if I was interested in a leadership position. He reviewed my resume and noticed that I didn’t have much public speaking experience. He told me that I would have a better chance at obtaining the leadership position if I joined Toastmasters International because I could give presentations and take on leadership positions within this organization. I joined a local Toastmasters club and starting speaking. During my first year, I became Vice-President of Public Relations and throughout the years, I served as Vice-President of Education and Vice-President of Membership. Although I didn’t get the position, I have been fortunate to learn and develop leadership and public speaking skills with fellow Toastmasters.

The highlight of my speaking journey was when I was asked by Dr. Mansur Hasib, a dynamic speaker and fellow Toastmaster, to be one of the keynote speakers in the Personal Branding for Everyone, Fall 2023 Global Conference. I present a speech entitled “My Time is Not Your Time”. During the speech, I talk about my personal experiences and the experiences of famous people who were delayed in achieving success. I encourage the audience to keep going after their goals despite the delays.

My journey into becoming a speaker has been riddled with starts and stops. However, April 2024 will commemorate my sixth year as a speaker. I’m excited to see what opportunities are ahead of me to encourage others to improve their public speaking skills to boldly share their stories.

From Pen and Paper to Published Book: A Reflection on the Forces that Influenced Me to Write

Shani Smith reflects on how life events influenced her writing journey.

I still have the diary my mother purchased for me at seven years old. I was so excited to write my thoughts in it. Each page averaged about three sentences; however, on the days that something really serious happened (i.e., my crush paid attention to me), I wrote several pages detailing the event.  When I was ten years old, every day my English teacher gave the class a writing prompt and required us to write in our journals for fifteen minutes. Although I enjoyed writing, I was intimidated by the time limit.  I worried that after fifteen minutes I would have a blank page. Now I realize that the teacher was not only ensuring that we use proper grammar and punctuation; she was developing our consistency.

When I was in the eighth grade, I won an award for an essay I had written about my maternal grandmother. In the essay, I talked about how she did not let being illiterate hinder her from obtaining leadership positions at church and at the residents’ association at her senior citizens’ home. After I won the award, my mother was convinced that one day I would write a book.

After my grandmother passed away in 2005, my mother and I would often reflect on my grandmother’s sayings. She would often say “I Didn’t Part My Lips” while talking on the phone with her church friends. My mother said this saying would be a great title for a book. I agreed, but didn’t make an effort to learn how to write a book. It wasn’t until 2017after I read a book  entitled “Choose Yourself” by James Altucher that I was ready to write my first book. In the book, he talked about how he became a self-published author, why everyone can have a virtual mentor, and the habits he implemented to help overcome obstacles. I obtained a virtual writing mentor who guided me to self-publish my first book in 2019 I Didn’t Part My Lips: Survival Strategies for Introverts Living in an Extroverted World.

Looking back, I believe that emotional events have influenced me to write.

From Obscurity to Spotlight: Effective Tactics for Creatives to Get Discovered

Getting discovered as a creative is a daunting task. This article provides insights on how to expand your presence online and offline.

In an age where talent is abundant and technology has paved the way for diversified platforms, standing out as a creative—be it as a fashion designer, artist, or maker—can seem like an uphill task. Yet, within this vast landscape lie numerous opportunities for those who know how to strategically position themselves. Here are eight potential strategies to explore, each presenting a viable avenue towards getting discovered in the bustling creative scene.

Building a Robust Online Presence

In the digital age, having an online presence is essential. For creatives, a professional website can act as a centralized portfolio where potential clients or collaborators can view your work. Pair this with an engaging presence on social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, or TikTok, and you've got a combination that keeps followers interested while attracting new eyes to your work.

Actively Participate in Industry Events

Networking continues to be a cornerstone of professional growth. Attending events—whether fashion shows, art exhibitions, or craft fairs—not only keeps you updated with industry trends but also opens up opportunities for interaction with industry professionals and potential customers, thereby expanding your reach.

Joining Competitions

Competitions offer a unique stage for artists to gain visibility and recognition. Regardless of the scale—be it local or international—contests related to your field of creativity serve as an ideal canvas to exhibit your finest work, allowing you to stand out in the community of your peers. In this spotlight, your distinct voice and style can echo further, reaching wider audiences.

Collaborating with Other Creatives

Collaboration emerges as a potent catalyst, stimulating both creativity and exposure. When you join forces with other creatives on innovative projects, it brings your work to fresh audiences and nurtures a network within the artistic community. This synergy amplifies your visibility and fosters enduring relationships that can be instrumental in your creative journey.

Showcasing Your Work at Local Events and Shows

Local art exhibits, design bazaars, or pop-up shops serve as potent platforms for enhancing your visibility within your community. Engaging with attendees and garnering their feedback helps in the iterative process of refining your work, thereby broadening your consumer network. These interactions are integral steps towards attaining broader recognition in the creative realm.

Engaging in Industry-Specific Workshops or Courses

The dynamic nature of the art and design landscape necessitates perpetual learning as a vital element for personal and professional evolution. Participation in workshops or courses tailored to your craft not only augments your skill set but also opens up avenues for networking. These educational experiences often lead to beneficial alliances or mentorships, further enriching your creative journey.

Generating Leads Through Content Syndication

Considering lead generation might seem overwhelming; however, here's a possible solution: content syndication. By disseminating your work, expertise, and insights across various platforms and publications, you not only exhibit your talents and knowledge but also magnetize potential clients and followers towards your creative pursuits. In the process, you build an authoritative presence in your field and facilitate a broader conversation about your work, further amplifying your reach and impact.

Utilizing Social Media for Customer Engagement

Social media platforms transcend mere display spaces for artistry, evolving into strategic channels for interacting with potential customers. Effective engagement methods include timely responses to inquiries, sharing insightful behind-the-scenes content, and executing well-targeted ad campaigns. These techniques foster audience growth and cultivate a community around your creative work.

Navigating the world of art, design, and creativity can be challenging, especially when aiming for discovery and recognition. However, by following strategies like attending industry events, submitting work to competitions, showcasing work locally, and generating leads through content syndication, creatives can enhance their visibility, establish valuable connections, and ultimately increase their chances of getting discovered in this competitive landscape. Remember, each creative journey is unique, and the effectiveness of these strategies may vary. Keep exploring, stay consistent, and let your creative light shine.

Using Everyday Technology to Lead a Greener, More Sustainable Life

This article discusses eight practical steps to take to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

In today's world, where the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent, taking steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle has never been more important. But it doesn't have to involve drastic changes or expensive alternatives. Many everyday technologies can help us live greener and reduce our carbon footprint, such as shopping for eco-friendly everyday essentials. From installing smart thermostats to switching to energy-efficient appliances, this article from SJS writes will explore more ways you can use technology to live a more sustainable life.

Install a Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat is a device that allows you to control your home's heating and cooling remotely using your smartphone or voice assistant. By being able to adjust your home's temperature from anywhere, you can optimize energy use, avoid overuse of heating or cooling, and reduce energy consumption. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Energy, using a programmable thermostat can save you up to 15% on your heating and cooling bills.

Use LED Bulbs

LED bulbs are another technology that can help you reduce your energy usage. They consume up to 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 25 times longer. Although they may have a higher upfront cost, their long lifespan makes them more cost-effective over time. They also emit less heat, which can also help you save on air conditioning costs.

Start a Green Business

Starting an eco-friendly business is an impactful way to contribute to a sustainable future while capitalizing on the growing demand for green products and services. From renewable energy solutions to sustainable fashion, and from organic farming to green construction, there are countless green business ideas to explore. With the aid of green technology, these businesses can operate more efficiently, reduce their environmental footprint, and meet the needs of increasingly eco-conscious consumers. It's a great way to align your entrepreneurial ambitions with the goal of environmental conservation.

Switch to Streaming Services

Streaming services have revolutionized the way we consume entertainment. But did you know that they can also help you reduce your carbon footprint? By avoiding physical discs or tapes, streaming services save energy and reduce waste. They also reduce the number of trips you need to take to the video store or theater, which in turn reduces your fuel consumption.

Upgrade Your Appliances

Updating your appliances for energy efficiency is a smart move towards a greener and more cost-effective home. Energy-efficient appliances consume less electricity, reducing your carbon footprint and saving you money on energy bills in the long run. Consider replacing old appliances with ENERGY STAR certified ones, as they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA. Additionally, installing a range hood in your kitchen can contribute to a healthier home environment. Range hoods help remove smoke, grease, and odors, improving air quality and making your cooking experience more pleasant. Remember, every step towards energy efficiency not only benefits your wallet but also our planet.

Switch to an Electric Car

If you're in the market for a new car, consider switching to an electric car. Electric cars produce zero emissions and are becoming more affordable and accessible. Although they may have a higher upfront cost than traditional gas-powered cars, electric cars can save you money over time through reduced fuel costs and tax incentives. They also require less maintenance and often have a longer lifespan.

Embrace Greener Exercise

Adjusting your exercise habits can be a practical way to reduce your carbon footprint. For instance, instead of driving to the gym to walk on a treadmill, consider walking in your local area. Utilizing a walk score map can help you find the best and safest places to walk near your home. This not only eliminates the emissions produced by your car but also allows you to enjoy the outdoors and connect with your community. In addition, given that walking is a low-impact exercise, it's suitable for all fitness levels. So, not only do you get to stay fit, but you also contribute to a healthier planet.

Make Your Own Natural Cleaners

Making your own natural cleaners is an excellent way to reduce the number of harsh chemicals in our environment. Many commercial cleaning products contain substances that can be harmful to both our health and the ecosystem. By creating your own cleaners using simple, natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils, you can effectively clean your home while minimizing your ecological footprint. This not only benefits the environment but also reduces exposure to potentially harmful substances for you and your family. Plus, it's often a more cost-effective solution compared to buying store-bought cleaners.

Living a more sustainable lifestyle doesn't have to be difficult or costly. By making use of everyday technologies like smart thermostats and LED bulbs, you can reduce your carbon footprint and save money on your energy bills. Also consider how your business and exercise habits can become greener. Small changes can have a big impact, and by taking steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle, you're helping to create a better world for future generations.

10 Tips to Protect Your Career from Automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

This post provides insights to mitigate the impact of automation and AI on employees’ careers.

Automation and artificial intelligence have taken over routine tasks including customer service and inventory stocking. However, people are still needed to monitor and provide context to the new technology. Below are tips to empower you to keep developing your career.

1.       Get training on automation and AI  from tech schools.

Getting training from tech schools instead of traditional four-year colleges may be the key for young adults gaining entry-level positions.

2.       Take all the automation and artificial intelligence training offered at your job.

Taking training offered at your job will update your skills and improve your productivity. Knowledge is power.

3.       Present context-based ideas.

ChatGPT isn’t able to place the information retrieved into context. Humans are needed to provide perspective for this information.

4.       Improve your public speaking skills.

ChatGPT can help you write your speech; however, it can’t present the speech to an audience and interpret body language as humans can. Public speaking is still a vital skill that will be needed despite the advances in AI.

5.       Strengthen your curiosity.

By enhancing your curiosity, you can learn new subjects quickly which will allow you to optimize your productivity while using AI.

6.       Enhance your creativity.

Exposing yourself to new people, events, books, movies, etc. will allow you to process and connect new ideas that can make you an asset to your organization.

7.       Grow your emotional intelligence.

With automation and artificial intelligence playing important roles in the workplace, leaders need emotional intelligence to effectively communicate the impacts of these roles with employees and stakeholders.

8.       Improve your critical thinking.

AI provides a plethora of information that needs to be interpreted. In the article, Six essential human skills to stay competitive in the age of AI, Bernard Marr, provides the following questions to ask yourself to improve critical thinking while reading information.

·       What is the main argument?

·       What evidence is being presented?

·       Are there any flaws in the argument or evidence?

·       Are there any alternative explanations or viewpoints?

9.       Be flexible.

Quickly adopting to new technologies and getting out of your comfort zone are essential to navigating AI. Flexibility also is needed when automation is not functioning and you may have to manual perform a task at your job.

10.   Increase your expertise.

Currently, ChatGPT provides basic information on topics. Subject matter experts are still needed to provide insights.

What does it mean to be a strong woman?

In honor of the last week of Women History Month, this post reflects on what it means to be a strong woman.

You can make it through this. You are strong. A friend and colleague said this to encourage me while I was seeking another job to escape a toxic work environment. At that time, I didn’t feel strong. I wanted to quit my job and live off my savings for a while until I figured out my next move. However, I didn’t because I value financial security. I knew I would feel more stress and discomfort if I didn’t find a position at a time I designated in my mind.

Over the years, I have pondered what it means to be a strong woman, and I have come up with the following:

1.     A strong woman knows her worth.

She may have to endure discomfort until she gets what she deserves, but she doesn’t settle.

2.     A strong woman has  great professional and personal networks.

She nurtures these networks and they provide assistance and encouragement to her.

3.     A strong woman practices self-care.

She takes time to ensure that her mental, physical, and spiritual health are maintained.

4.     A strong woman asks for help.

She releases her pride and asks others for help.

5.     A strong woman is optimistic.

She may have faced many obstacles and made bad decisions; however, she knows that her past does not govern her success in the future.

Sleep when the baby sleeps

The author of this post gives her perspective on three pieces of advice given to new mothers about their infants.

Get as much rest as you can while your baby is sleeping. This sounds like practical advice to give to new mothers; however, is this advice always feasible?  As a new mother, I have only applied this well-meaning advice after I have finished urgent tasks. My daughter usually takes 5–30-minute naps during the day. A quick nap may be rejuvenating to some people, but it makes me realize how tired I am. Sometimes she sleeps for two hours during the day and I can prepare formula, do housework, and schedule appointments.

Don’t spoil the baby by picking the baby up too much. I heard this advice many years before having my daughter and thought that it was true. However, after reading the parenting book Good Inside by Dr. Becky Kennedy, I realize that infants need to be picked up and held often to nurture their development.

Sometimes you have to let some things go. This advice is difficult to take when you are accustomed to doing most things yourself. I took “baby steps” on outsourcing chores two years ago when I hired a lawn care company to maintain my small yard. I know when my maternity leave ends, I will have to allow someone else to care for my daughter. With the dynamic nature of parenthood, I know I will eventually have to outsource other tasks.

What other advice have you been given that does not fit your circumstance?

Are you richer with or without kids?

To have children or not is a scenario some women face during their careers. Some people believe their earning potential will be limited if they have children. This article discusses how having children can shift priorities and allow certain areas of life become richer.

In Fall 2022, I received a link via text message to an article published in Bloomberg.com entitled Women Who Stay Single and Don’t Have Kids Are Getting Richer. The person who sent me the link didn’t know that I was expecting my first child. Out of curiosity, I read the article and was left with one outstanding  question: Did the new research from St. Louis Federal, cited by the author of this article, include women from various racial groups and ethnicities?

In 2019, I viewed an Instagram video post by Supa Cent, an entrepreneur, that showed her signing closing documents for a warehouse for her cosmetics line while she was in the hospital having contractions before giving birth to her daughter. Observing how undeterred she was in achieving her dreams, inspired me during my pregnancy journey.

Before having my child, I basked in my freedom from only being responsible for myself. I never thought having a child would limit my earning potential. I believed that having a child would strengthen my resolve to acquire more resources for my family. In addition, I have become “richer” in other aspects of my life. I’m richer in three attributes: prioritization, gratitude, and creativity.

Prioritization

Having a child is helped me to better prioritize my daily tasks. I spend less time mindlessly scrolling on my cell phone and more time keeping myself organized to better care for my child.

Gratitude

I’m thankful for the village that has surrounded me since having my child and I now make a greater effort to write down what I’m grateful for.

Creativity

I never thought I could feed a child and feed myself simultaneously but I figured out a way.

I’m sure I’ll grow richer in other attributes during my parenthood journey.

Labor Day 2022: Five Recent Acts/Plans to Advance American Workers

This post briefly discusses the history of Labor Day and the five most recent acts/plans initiated that impact American Workers.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.” Oregon was the first state to pass a law on February 21, 1887 to recognize Labor Day. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act declaring the first Monday in September of each year to commemorate Labor Day. Four years later in 1898, Congress passed the Erdman Act, a comprehensive version of the 1888 Railroad workers legislation, with additional sections to make it illegal to fire workers for their union membership. However, in 1908, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Erdman Act was “an unconstitutional infringement upon the freedom of contract (Adair v. United States, 1908)”. Two decades later, the U.S. government shifted its philosophy with the enactment of the Norris-La Guardia Act (1932). This act stated that workers should be able to join unions without interference from employers.

Over the years there have been several acts/plans to advance American workers. Listed below are the five most recent acts/plans.

1.       American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021

ARPA was enacted to provide “additional relief to address the continued impact of COVID-19 (on the economy, public health, state and local governments, individuals, and businesses”. On September 2, 2022, President Biden announced that 21 winners representing 24 states will receive “between $25 million and $65 million to execute transformational projects and revitalize local industries”.

2.       Bipartisan Infrastructure Law 2021 (Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act)

This law was created with the following objectives:

  • rebuild America’s roads, bridges and rails

  • expand access to clean drinking water

  • ensure Americans access to high-speed internet

  • tackle the climate crisis

  • advance environmental justice

  • invest in underserved communities

For those who are interested in executing the objectives listed above, there are several grants/funding programs connected with this legislation.

3.       CHIPS and Science Act of 2022

This act has the following objectives:

  • Bolster U.S. leadership in semiconductors by providing $52.7 billion for American semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and workforce development

  • Promote U.S. innovation in wireless supply chains by providing $1.5 billion for promoting and deploying wireless technologies that use open and interoperable radio access networks

  • Advance U.S. global leadership in the technologies of the future by public investment in research and development in areas including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced computing, and quantum information technologies

  • Provide STEM opportunities to people from underserved and marginalized communities by new and expanded investments in STEM education and training from K-12 to community college, undergraduate and graduate education

4.       Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) 2022

The IRA was established to mitigate inflation by lowering the costs of prescription drugs, health care, and energy. Medicare will be able to negotiate prices for high prescription drugs. Health insurance subsidies are extended for families benefiting from the Affordable Care Act. Clean energy businesses will be incentivized if they pay workers fair wages and use registered apprenticeship programs.

5.       The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (H.R. 1065)

This Act passed the House in May 2022 and cleared the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee by a 19-2 vote in August 2022. If passed by the Senate, the law would provide “short-term, reasonable accommodations to pregnant women in the workplace.”

Commemorating Freedom

June and July are months that we celebrate freedom for Americans. However, this year’s celebrations may not be as festive as previous years due to the recent Supreme Court decision regarding Roe v. Wade. This post discusses three celebrations that occur in June and July and suggests ways for American citizens to advocate for their freedom.

June and July celebrate freedom. Last month the United States celebrated freedom for two groups: LGBTQ+ and African Americans. LGBTQ+ pride month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan which was a pivotal turning point in the Gay Liberation Movement. In 2021, Juneteenth was declared a national holiday to mark the anniversary of the announcement made by Gordon Granger, a Union Army general, that proclaimed freedom for enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865.

This month the United States will celebrate Independence Day (Fourth of July) to remember when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence that separated the thirteen colonies from Great Britain. This adoption signified that America was a nation free from the restrictions placed by the British monarchy. This year’s Fourth of July celebration may not have the same celebratory tone as in previous years due to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022. Roe v. Wade protected reproductive rights for women. Protests are expected in many states during the Fourth of July weekend and the hashtag #Cancel4thOfJuly is being seen on social media platforms.

What can you do to advocate for freedom?

1.       Support (volunteer, donate, etc.) organizations that work to protect freedom.

2.       Educate yourself and your family on your rights.

3.       Vote for your ideal candidate in local, state, and federal elections.

4.       Hold your elected officials accountable by either calling, emailing, or sending letters regarding issues you want them to act on.

Generational tips for preparing for a recession

Stories of an impending recession in the U.S. economy have dominated the news headlines. This post provides tips for every stage of work life to prepare for a recession.

Rising gas prices, interest rates, and layoffs are indicators that the economy may be headed for a recession.  The good news is that a recession typically lasts for six to twelve months. Below are a few tips depending on your stage in life that will help you prepare for a recession.

Young professionals (18-24 years old)

1.       Develop a budget. A budget will allow you to assess how you spend your money and prioritize essential expenses.

2.       Pay off consumer debt. Struggling to pay off debt during a recession can adversely affect your financial future.

3.       Develop multiple streams of income. Evaluate your interest and skills and develop active (e.g., delivery driver, freelance consulting) and/or passive (e.g., course creation, real estate investing income streams.

Career professionals (25-65 years old)

1.       Increase savings. Work towards developing an emergency fund for at least one year.

2.       Keep bonds in your retirement portfolio. Bonds provide a buffer when stocks are performing poorly.

3.       Don’t try to time the market. Financial experts recommend to diversify your assets rather than making hasty decisions when the stock market is down.

4.       Refer to step #3 under “Young professionals (18-24 years old)”.

Retirees

1.       Pay down debt. Paying interest on loans will limit the amount of money you can place in an emergency fund.

2.       Stash your cash. Keep at least a year’s worth of expenses in your retirement account.

3.       Shift some assets into bonds. Review your asset allocation to ensure that you don’t have most of your assets in stocks that are likely plunging during a recession.

Your experience is not my experience

Well-meaning mentors, colleagues, friends, and family who have had career success often advise us on how to manage our careers to obtain the same success. If you don’t achieve similar success, you may be questioned or even question yourself. In this post the author shares her experience and provides two main factors that may inhibit your career growth.

Results may vary. It is likely that you have seen this phrase in commercials which tout the benefits of their products. Don’t you wish that your mentors, colleagues, friends, and family would provide this disclaimer when giving you advice about your career? In my career I have listened intently to career success stories and followed well-meaning advice provided by individuals who have had successful and financially prosperous careers. I was told to network, get involved with professional organizations, and take on additional responsibilities at work. Although I followed their advice, I have yet to receive the accolades and compensation of these individuals. However, their advice has allowed me to network with many people and have a variety of career experiences. When I have shared the outcome of my efforts with colleagues, some were surprised that I had not been promoted because they knew that I had put in a lot of hard work.  A few acquaintances even questioned if I was working “hard” enough. This questioning caused me to ask myself if I was doing everything I could to achieve the success that I wanted.

Factors that may inhibit your career growth

1.       Working in a toxic work environment.

If you find that leadership does not actively support professional development, it is time to seek other employment.

2.       Mindset

I have often heard the phrase: “It’s better to stay with the devil that you know, than the devil you don’t” as it relates to seeking a better career opportunity. This mindset cripples career growth.

Instead of doubling down on my job to the point of burnout, I decided to reevaluate my definition of a successful career. A successful career for me now includes acquiring professional skills (e.g., writing, content creation, and public speaking) that impacts others and enriches my professional and personal life.  Now when I’m questioned on why I haven’t received the career success that others have obtained, my response will be: “Thank you for your observation, but your experience is not my experience”.
